Every PC gamer worth his or her "salt" is always interested in the upcoming "next thing". There's evidence of this in the current online wars over the best next generation 2D/3D video card, as many gamers have vocally taken sides with "their" pick, including those that have only recently just bought a Voodoo2 card.
So whenever a new technology pops up for consumer application in the entertainment sector of the PC world, many users clamor over to it to see if it is indeed the "next thing".
3D-video presentation has been around for a long time. Who among us will ever forget the hideous and brain frying red and blue glasses that were used years ago to fool the brain into thinking that a flat surface had a true depth of field? Luckily technology has progressed, and now full color 3D images can be rendered in astonishing detail and clarity, those of you who have been lucky enough to take in a 3D "IMAX" motion picture know what I mean.
It therefore is a natural transition to bring visual 3D to the desktop PC, to an arena of games that already call themselves "3D", yet are actually 2D in their presentation. Quake 2, Forsaken, Incoming, Need For Speed II SE, Unreal, any one of these titles seems like a perfect candidate to make the transition to an actual 3D universe, giving the player a better illustration of how standing on a castle's ledge, or driving along a mountainous dirt road at high speed could possibly be detrimental to their health.
