Everglide were one of the first companies to redesign the mouse pad. It would have been quite possible for fUnc Industries to come up with their own variation, but instead, they decided to redesign things again, and what they came up with is the rather unusual, but surprisingly usable, sUrface 1030. The sUrface 1030 is essentially actually two mouse pads in one, and it consists of three components that fit together. You have the plastic mouse pad surface itself which has a smoother side and a rougher side, both of which have a similar texture to the Everglide, although the smoother side has a finer texture and feels a lot more like the 3M. This plastic mousing surface then sits in a rubber sheet, with a raised area surrounding the entire plastic mousing surface. You can then in turn hook onto the rubber sheet a mouse cord clip. At this point you're probably thinking "Two surfaces? Mouse cord clip? Are they really useful?" Well, as a matter of fact, yes, surprisingly so.
Using the surface 1030 for a good few hours I would actually find myself flipping it over depending on the situation. For games of Instagib in UT or a bit of AWP rampaging in Counter Strike (or even Steyr Scout rampaging if I'm in the mood to humiliate one or two people) the smoother side is perfect as it offers more grip. Flip it over to the rougher side and you're good and ready to rack up a solid frag count in faster paced games like Unreal Tournament or Quake 3 Arena where sniping often takes a back seat to close quarters fire fights. I also prefer the smoother surface for use with windows - nothing is more annoying than clicking the wrong button, so the smoother surface with its better grip proved ideal. At first the mouse cord clip looked, to be honest, like a bit of a gimmick, but with actual use it's actually particularly useful. You coil the mouse cord nearest to the mouse in a loop, clip it in and then the cord stays there - no more slipping down the side of your desk while you aren't looking, no more snagging on the edge of your monitor. It really is surprisingly useful and a welcome addition to an already excellent mouse pad.
The only real down side to the sUrface 1030 is that it can be a little tricky to clean. The plastic pad only needs a quick wipe with a wet cloth but the indented fUnc 1030 logo at the top of the rubber base collects dust quite easily and nothing short of putting it in the dishwasher will really clean it. Still, there's not much more to fault this pad for. And hey, it comes in its own tin just like the Boomslang! Call me easily impressed if you will...
