It seems like only yesterday we were still fiddling with 16-bit ISA sound cards and paying a premium for them. Now with the advent of the PCI sound card, not only can we have 3D positional sound without a slowdown, but the prices are affordable too. For less than their predecessors, these PCI cards offer four speaker support, multiple stream playback, and positional audio - quite a bargain. Luckily, contrary to the days of yore, there is now some competition in the market. Rather than having a single company selling proprietary boards, we have quite a few soundcards based all on the same chipset.

While the variety may not be there when you have a bunch of cards all based on one chipset, competition does drive prices down and make products better. This is clearly evident with the SonicVortex2, offering a superior price on a similar product to many of its competitors. This is not to mention the additional S/P-DIF optical output that the SonicVortex2 employs to separate itself from the pack. While this does not make it the best solution on the market, for the money it will certainly give chase.

  • Award winning Aureal Vortex2 chipset
  • "Jump right in" bundle
  • S/P-DIF optical output
  • Low Price

  • No "extras" in the design
  • Not from a typical sound card company
