In late Q3 of this year, Intel(r) is planning on releasing their Coppermine (.18micron process technology) range of CPUs for the Mainstream Notebook segments. In the $1500 - $2000 range, the speed should roll in at the 400MHz mark and run at a reduced 1.6volts. For the more expensive Mainstream Performance 2 segment, a 500MHz will also be on the scene. For the Professional and Mainstream Performance 3 segments, not only is their promise of the 500MHz Coppermine but also speeds up to 600MHz.
Speaking of .18micron, Intel(r)'s Coppermine will also debut at the 400MHz speeds for Mini Notebooks. A September release date has also been set. Again the lower amount of heat emitted by the .18micron Coppermine CPU will allow for this speed ramping.
The Over $ 3000 Professional Mobile PC
Q1: Pentium(r) II 366MHz, mobile version on .25micron w/256K on-die L2 cache
Q2: Pentium(r) II 400MHz mobile version on .18micron, 66MHz system bus introduced late in the quarter
Q3: Pentium(r) 433MHz mobile version on .18micron introduced, Coppermine 500+MHz mobile version on .18micron introduced late in the quarter
Q4: Possible introduction of 600MHz mobile version on .18 micron
The Mainstream Performance Mobile PC Trio
Intel(r) is set to launch their new 400MHz Pentium(r) II processor for the 'performance' segment later on this year in June. This will see the introductions of their .18micron process technology in order to reduce the power utilization whilst ramping up the performance. The .18micron part will debut within the Mainstream Performance segment in Laptops costing $2500 - $3000 as well as in the 'Professional' segment for notebooks costing over $3000.
