As even the casual gamer will know, the gaming scene is no stranger to controversy. Going back to Wolfenstein with its violence and Nazis, we have seen outrage stirring games such as the roadkill sim Carmageddon, the crime-'em-up Grand Theft Auto and a slew of graphically violent first person shooters like Duke Nukem, Quake 2, Unreal and so on. However all of these titles pale in comparison to Kingpin: Life of Crime, already gaining a reputation as the godfather of controversial titles, the new heavyweight champion of violence and profanity.
However along with great violent games such as Grand Theft Auto, where there was still great gameplay underneath the shocking surface, there are games such as Postal with their mindless violence and minimal gameplay. Controversy does not a good game make. Does Kingpin manage to distinguish itself as a great game without relying on the violence and language to get sales, or is Interplay relying on the inevitable outcry from the press alone to shift units? Looks like its time to read on, because this review is here to answer those same questions and more about this new Kingpin of controversy.
