At that price and for what this new edition offers it may likely even attract some of UT's hardcore audience. The package includes not only the original game, but also three map pack add-ons and two new mods, Rocket Arena and Chaos UT, that were previously available online. The edition is rounded out with 20 new maps total, new character skins and enhanced Relic power-ups.
The new mods interestingly will probably appeal more to those who have already proven their stuff in the normal tournament mode, but it is fitting that they are in the Game of the Year Edition and certainly anyone who is new to the game will probably grow into them. However as they are very different – both from the original game and each other – they can be a little confusing for those not familiar with this different style of play.
Rocket Arena is a to-the-death fight without any extra weapons, power-ups or ammo so you shouldn't waste any shots unwisely. The playing ground is completely level; everyone starts with a full complement of fully loaded weapons, maximum armor and 100% health. Often times the winner is determined by whomever is the more skilled player and makes better use of this assortment of different guns. Players can still get lucky of course, but this is truly a game of skill and those with previous UT experience will easily come out on top. On the plus side no one can complain that they lost simply because they faced an opponent who had superior weapons.
The Chaos UT mod is essentially a deluxe version of UT but “with more stuff!” There are loads of new weapons to hack, slash and basically dismember your opponent with. The weapons don't really change the dynamic of the arena all that much and novices who learn with these new weapons might even have an edge as they fight against hardened pros who haven't yet faced these diverse swords, crossbows and claws. The addition of sentry turrets, which will shoot at anyone who makes the mistake of coming within its proximity, will fire until it is empty and can be used to protect your back and guard your flanks. But be warned as it can be reloaded by an enemy and thus become a hostile weapon! Those looking for further challenges can also take advantage of the Chaos UT variations, which include a SwordArena making this quite a challenging arena indeed.
The new maps add yet more gothic and science fiction themed settings as well as more boats and space ships. There are now so many different maps that it is safe to say that there is really something for everyone! Likewise the new skins also help diversify the game a bit so players can expect to see a few more faces in the game, or in some cases some ugly faces on creatures with four arms!
