When Shiny told Interplay they didn't want to make MDK 2, you'd think Interplay would have let it rest and given up. After all, like them or not, no one makes games quite like Shiny does. Until now that is. At the request of Interplay, Bioware of all people ended up developing the sequel to one of the strangest titles in recent memory, somehow outdoing the first game in almost all areas in the process. We love MDK 2, and we love Bioware. Here's why.
This time round, it isn't just Kurt doing the fighting. Those of you who played the original might remember Doctor Fluke Hawkins, designer of the ultra sleek Kevlar coil suit and head-mounted sniping rifle, and his four-armed robotic dog Max who only appeared in the manual and the odd level change screen. Well, rather than keeping them in the background Bioware decided to let the player control one of the three characters at different stages in the game.
With the 3 very different characters, MDK2 is an ever changing gaming experience but it's also incredibly damn fun. Kurt still has the coolest implementation of a sniping rifle we've ever seen as well as the ingenious ribbon-chute, which is still a joy to glide around with. He also has a few new tricks up his sleeve like the sniper shield, which offers a bit more protection from incoming fire when you're trying to take off an enemy earlobe from afar, as well as a cloaking device he can pick up to further increase his stealth capabilities.
