Imperium Galactica II: Alliances is the sequel to Imperium Galactica, a universe conquering real-time strategy game similar to the Master of Orion series. Players must build their empire through colonization, diplomacy, research, and war. The new subtitle of "Alliances" implies a heightened priority on diplomacy and the new 3D graphics are certainly pleasing, but can it follow through on these lures and deliver an experience better than its peers? Especially for veterans of the original game, the answer is "no". But where did Imperium Galactica II, having successfully addressed some of the biggest concerns of Imperium Galactica, go wrong?

Imperium Galactica II is at best an average space conquest game and at worst a buggy and passionless disappointment. By staying too close to the original Imperium Galactica, the sequel offers little new to the veteran gamer. The graphics and sound have improved and the lengthy campaigns and scenarios offer much play time. In every other facet of the game, however, from combat to research to diplomacy, there's little change, and the original wasn't strong in the depth department to begin with.

Simplicity can be a virtue, but it's possible to be too simple, and that's what happens with Imperium Galactica II. Combat in Imperium Galactica took place on a two-dimensional battlefield. Combat in Imperium Galactica II advances to feature 3D ships but while you can rotate and zoom the view the combat itself is still very two-dimensional. It's a relatively plain affair where ships line up and hammer away until there's a retreat or a survivor. Pretenses at tactical elegance, such as the ability to define initial formations and to control ships Command & Conquer-style, prove largely superfluous because battles usually distill into contests of numbers. A disparity in the technology level of the forces can make a difference, especially early in the campaigns. Late in the game, however, when huge fleets are meeting, technology is usually comparable between forces of the strongest races, and neither it nor maneuvering skill are enough to beat large numbers. There are icons on the side of the battle screen that give players control over the different weapons on the ships, but they're limited and nearly useless.
