Admittedly, much of what you get in Giants has been done before - spells, guns, jetpacks, a nice terrain engine and even giant monsters, but in Giants it's all done so well and with so many nice touches too - it's the panache and flair with which they've tied everything together that makes this such an enjoyable game. It almost feels like a series of concepts that clearly came about from someone saying “hey, wouldn't this be cool”, but unlike so many developers before them who had “lots of cool ideas” to put into a game, the guys at Planet Moon had the patience and savvy to tie it all together and make it work as a complete and coherent game that does things a little differently rather than churning out a confused mess of a game.
Giants is an excellent game and an experience I won't be forgetting any time soon. It's just a shame that Planet Moon didn't spend a little more time squashing bugs as they clearly spent a lot of time on the gameplay elements but not quite enough on tightening up the code quality some more. Still, I'm not one to complain about a great game, which is precisely what Giants is overall.
