Initial amazement with the battlefield system holds up well over the long run, though there are certainly some letdowns. Meaningful flaws are primarily in the artificial intelligence. Players cannot participate in mission planning except when transmitting suggestions for strike targets from the cockpit to headquarters. At the mission planning screen, missions can only be generated by the computer, and it does an acceptable job but can miss golden opportunities to target undefended bases or resources. In situations like this, it's often the responsibility of the user to take a strike mission to a nearby area, and demolish the sitting duck as a "target of opportunity" on the way home. This workaround achieves the desired objective, but seems an unrealistic method of planning.
The artificial intelligence of the other computer-operated vehicles and aircraft is subject to the same concerns and praises. All the other battlefield effectives proceed dutifully on their missions, but with few exceptions, they do them in an uninspired fashion. Recon helicopters fly in a straight line to their target areas, transmit data back to base, then fly back again in a straight line, as if being flown by robots. When fired upon, they simply maintain their current course, though they do release countermeasures. The only behavior superior to this seemed to be in some of the ground convoys, where tanks and armored cars would pull off a highway and form defensive circles when facing an airborne enemy. And though Comanche vs. Hokum keeps pace with other recent helicopter sims by including infantry, the foot soldiers appear rarely and almost as token figures. But watch out for the occasional shoulder-mounted SAM…
The computer-controlled entities also seem rather lifeless. Battlefield professionalism is one thing, but these troops have all the emotion of an old Speak and Spell unit. The experience is certainly different from time spent with the squadron mates of European Air War, where bomber pilots you were supposed to escort would scream "We're getting cut to pieces! Where are you guys?"
