Codename Eagle includes an assortment of planes, tanks, motorcycles, and armored cars. Each enables Red to travel faster across the huge levels and some missions take place entirely in vehicles, like the final one where you take off from an aircraft carrier in a biplane to shoot down some blimps.
The vehicles can be fun, but more often they're maddening. Control is tough, especially in the airplanes, and they don't have needed usability aids. Planes sport mushy flight models and are hard to land and turn. With practice, I learned to enjoy tooling around in the old crates, but I still think they're too bothersome. A game set in a James Bond-like fantasy should make it easy for players to achieve James Bond-like success. Codename Eagle's tough combat and driving often grounds its attempts at high adventure.
Vehicles also lack a compass, map overlay, and views to the sides or rear. This is an inconvenience in all the vehicles, but incredibly frustrating in the airplane because it makes bombing needlessly difficult. The included external views provide little help.
Codename Eagle supports team, capture the flag, and deathmatch play, but unlike many current games utilizing commercial hosts (MSN Gaming Zone or Gamestorm), Codename Eagle lets individuals host games over the Internet. Codename Eagle will search for current games when you want to join a game. The problem is that it could never find a game. I also tried hosting games but had no idea if they were visible by other users. I don't know if my problems were related to my system, a lack of players, or the software, but I eventually gave up.
