Critics of the Carmageddon series of games will tell you that they sold well solely due to the controversy surrounding their content. Critics will tell you otherwise. For weeks, British (and most likely American) newspapers kicked up an almighty storm over the fact that part of both games involved running over pedestrians. However, critics of the time were missing the point - at its heart, Carmegeddon and its sequel, Carmageddon: Carpocalypse Now, were just damned good fun. Running over the pedestrians or zombies (depending on which version your country allowed to be sold) was just as unrealistic yet as amusing as gibbing an opponent in Quake is. It was also not the best part of the game; destroying the cars of your opponents was, especially if you managed it with the help of such over-the-top powerups as the "Acme Damage Magnifier" or "Solid Granite Car." Of course, you could finish the race, but only wimps did that.

While Carmageddon designers Stainless Studios worked on a new, unannounced driving game (and no, it's not another Carmageddon) Aussie developers Torus decided to take the wheel and knock-kick out another Carmageddon game. Does the Carmageddon series lose its momentum with Carmageddon: TDR 2000 or did developers manage to strap some nitros onto it to send another Carmageddon game screaming onto the top of the charts?
