What would any 3D shooter using the Quake 2 engine be without tools of destruction? We'd hate to imagine and thus we were left thoroughly impressed by the weapons that Corvus gets to use. One small gripe is that with only a total of four to choose from, we'd have liked more but that's only because we're greedy like that. However, the fact that each weapon has both a "normal" and a "powered up" state with varying degrees of damage inflicted and the inclusion of magical spells and defense capabilities does temper that gripe somewhat.

When you fire up Heretic II for the first time the Durhnwood Staff is Corvus' default weapon. As you'd expect it's not exactly the most powerful weapon you'll ever find but if mastered and used wisely, it should be enough to get you through the early stages. It's not just a staff as it also has a blade at one end, which you can lash out with. In its powered up state, it acts as a killing scythe. And during the later parts of the game saving up your ammo from your more powerful weapons, using the staff is still viable when taking out some of the weaker enemies you encounter at close range. Most interesting though is that not only can Corvus use the Staff to 'thwap' enemies but he can also use it to pole vault to areas that would otherwise remain inaccessible. This is a very novel feature indeed. It's not only innovative but also makes sure that even though you get to use other more powerful weapons later on in the game, the Staff still retains its usefulness.

Now this is where the long range combat and the fun begins. The HellStaff is also the first weapon Corvus uses that requires Ammo as opposed to Mana. You might not be able to 'pole vault' out of trouble with the Hellstaff but what it can't do in that department it more than makes up for it by being able to fire red fireballs (Hell Orbs). The projectiles it fires aren't the most powerful but when holding down the fire-button the HellStaff is able to 'rapid-fire' so to speak. This of course does more damage but uses up more Hell Orbs. A great mid-range weapon and with the use of a cross-hair you can pick off your enemies at a safe enough distance to be able to strafe and fire simultaneously. The ammo (Hell Orbs) is not abundant and replenishing your stocks whenever possible is always a good idea. Using the Hell Staff and the Hell Orb ammo you can sometimes kill two birds (or rats) with one stone so to speak. Also you do some serious GBH (grievous bodily harm) with nicely dismembered arms flying off of their target. In short, think of it as a metaphysical machine gun.
