The Mummy was actually a fairly enjoyable romp on the PlayStation but it is all too obvious that the PC version of the game that we're seeing is essentially a straight port of what was developed for that platform. The graphics are vastly superior to those of the aging console but appear a little flat at times on the PC. The biggest problem here is that the lighting effects aren't all that special, and the result is that it seems that Rick could just as easily be running through the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas rather than an ancient tomb.
The gameplay, which is certainly action packed in the early build, basically involves wandering through aimless Egyptian tombs, picking up everything that isn't entirely nailed down and battling various minions of the dead. In addition to mummies, there are the token scarabs, spirits and locusts that will hamper efforts to haul out the various ancient loot!
As the game progresses, the ante is upped and more hideous threats arrive and players can embark deeper into this underground city. The puzzle solving elements are compelling enough that fans of the film might want to partake on this expedition but this certainly never really manages to venture into anything we haven't seen before in other games.
