I was unable to test online multiplay in this beta version, but the designers are promising a more immersive and faster experience. Users can play simultaneously and watch their competitors' play from an overhead view. The Virtual Golf Association Tour (VGA) will be a massively multiplayer contest with sponsors and monthly tournaments, including prizes.
Okay, so this year, I won't have to write the same review of the new Links. There is enough here that is fresh to rate a thorough re-evaluation of this legendary franchise. Nevertheless, this is still Links, remember, the brand that has Arnold Palmer's endorsement. There are substantive changes here, but don't expect a radical revolution in this newest version of the game. The same conservative approach is still here. Don't look for any Xtreme golf variations here or manic color commentary. The Links series has always reminded me of Microsoft's Flight Simulator. It is more sim than game, preferring accurate modeling of the real-world game to entertainment values. That basic philosophy still holds trues in the 2001 edition of Links. Lovers of EA or Sierra's more game-like experiences may not be swayed, but longtime lovers of the Links experience should be pleased.
