The level of detail on the cars (glass, drivers head etc…) is truly superb. Better still are the advanced colored lighting and transparency effects on the chassis of the cars themselves. Some of the special effects such as, smoke, skid marks, sparks, weapon trails, detonations and debris are worthy of being labeled eye candy as well.
However, upon closer inspection, Dethkarz's visuals are certainly a case of 'style over substance' but even the 'style' is uneven. The high polygon count vehicles with full real-time reflection mapping (which looks brilliant) are painted in pastel colors but the backgrounds are not quite so well done. The art direction seems a bit off as well. The bright colors and simple design of Japanese influenced product packaging (anime) is meshed with sometimes realistic, sometimes fantastical locations/environments. The overall effect is a disregard for common everyday sights that are usually touchstones to making an environment feel believable. A good example is the cloud maps. Rather than use photo-realistic clouds to add subtlety to the skyscapes, they are airbrushed blobs.
