Can any of you think of a good excuse for another racing game? Here's Beam Software's:

Set in the future, armchair sports fans have a new favorite sport in Dethkarz. Combat style Races are held across the World and beyond. Simple but effective and a good enough excuse for a fast-paced arcade racer going by the name of Dethkarz. Taking influences from coin-op classics such as Scud Racer, it's clear that any thoughts of 'simulation' weren't high on the priority. At first sight, Dethkarz clearly resembles Ubi Soft's pod and Cryo's Mega Race. Blend pod's speed and visuals with Mega Race's weapons and futuristic landscapes and what you're left with is nothing short of Dethkarz. Of course, the only difference being that 1998 is the year of the 3D accelerator, whilst when Mega Race came out the thought of 3D acceleration was just a flicker of SST's imagination. But just as pod's 3Dfx patch (in 1997, the year of the patch, incidentally) brought many a gasp from gamers, Dethkarz does the very same thing by bringing that 'wow' factor at first glimpse.

Beam Software stated to Sharky Extreme that Dethkarz was built and designed from the ground up to support 3D accelerator cards. Those of you with a Voodoo2 SLI rig will most likely be the better off due to the insanely fast frame rates attainable with Dethkarz's Glide version. Those of you with TNT's (and soon Rage 128's) and G200's will witness a performance hit but what you'll lose out in terms of frame rate you will most certainly gain in terms of visual perfection. If you have a D3D card capable of going to 1600x1200 then Dethkarz is dressed to impress and still playable. Better still are the 32-bit modes, which shine in the visual department but sadly were just a bit on the slow side even on a Pentium II 400MHz. There is also a software renderer but we wouldn't really recommend it. Using it would undermine the fast fluid graphics, which are DethKarz's main strengths.
