This year’s E3 had plenty of licensed properties, but one of the best looking uses is Freedom: First Resistance, from the fiction of Anne McCaffrey. In short, the story is an apocalyptic future where the humans have to fight against oppressive alien control (gee, we've never seen that in a computer game before, have we?) The aliens, called the Catteni, don't know what's about to hit them, however, as the player takes control of a small band of resistance fighters.
Borrowing some technology from the Rogue Spear engine, Freedom: First Resistance is a single-player game where the user can switch among three different characters viewed from a third person perspective. The engine enhancements include puzzle support, a character dialog interface, hand-to-hand combat, and graphical improvements. Characters are well animated, each with numerous moves for combat. Challenges in the game require a range of skills and test players in combat, puzzle solving, and stealth. Players can select different characters to suit the situation. Designer Richard Dansky says McCaffrey gives Red Storm considerable freedom in crafting the game, but keeps in touch with the development team for updates and consulting.
