This is one of the most creative games we saw at E3. Evolva’s concepts aren’t entirely new, but no one has really executed them as successfully. The player controls a team of four alien commandos called geno-hunters to stop a parasite from ravaging a world, which it will then explode to spread itself to other planets. A squad combat game is old hat, but the story goes far beyond that.
For one thing, Evolva’s art style is very different, created by the makers of Organic Art. The geno-hunters are also unique in that they can steal DNA from their victims and mutate, gaining some of the victim’s traits, such as fire breathing. According to Interplay, there are over a billion combinations of possible geno-hunter traits, making for a diverse game with every play. The developers also promise some advances in AI that will make creatures behave realistically. Better yet, players can trade geno-hunters via the Internet or pit their best geno-hunters in deathmatches. With a May release date, we won’t have to wait long to see if these promises hold true.
