A classic series gets resurrected later this year when Infogrames releases the fourth installment of Alone in the Dark, subtitled The New Nightmare. The series protagonist, Edward Carnby, returns to investigate a mystery on Shadow Island, but players won't have to use him if they don't want to. A new character, Lara Croft, er, I mean, Aline Cedrac, is available. She has her own reasons for visiting Shadow Island, but the creepy creatures that live on the island won't care about that.

Like the earlier games, The New Nightmare uses a third-person perspective and many dark settings. The graphics have been heavily updated, and screens look a lot like paintings. The game is still dark, but much like the use of lighting in games like Resident Evil, Edward and Aline will use flashlights (the French like to call them 'torches') and guns to help them through. The monsters are nasty looking beasts and though the game is still many months away, sport nice animations and movement. They also react to the torch light, shying away from it. Interested players can visit www.aloneinthedark.com for more details on what looks to be a nice update to the series.
