The proprietary game engine being used for the game is simply known as the Duality EngineTM. Simple by name but not quite so simple by nature. By using portal type technology, it'll differ from Quake 2's pre-crunched BSP geometry. Duality EngineTM also designed for point-by-point creation of polygons (just like commercial 3D modeling tools) since it's also designed with cross platforms in mind. Both OpenGL and RAVE API's will be used for Duality's hardware accelerated version, which will feature support for 3D sound to boot. In addition, a software version is being implemented that can handle Translucency, clip-mapping and 24-bit color.

So how many attempts at a 3D first person shooter will it take before somebody finally frags Quake II? On current (soon forthcoming to non-members of the press) evidence Valve are the only ones that can seriously throw down their gauntlet and take the crown of best 3D first person shooter. But after the dust settles when Half-Life is out, what then? Our guess is that we'll be seeing a lot more developers using proprietary engines for games just like Duality. And with that in mind, Double Aught Inc (who are currently talking to publishers), may well have more than just a fighting chance with Duality, so we'll be keeping close tabs on it for you.
