Although there have been a number of bad RTS titles, no one paid any of them much attention and they quickly disappeared without a trace. That is, until Star Wars: Force Commander recently appeared on the scene. A horrendously brutalised Star Wars soundtrack accompanies the game, something we'll never forgive Lucas Arts for. Who'd have thought anyone could turn the beautiful orchestral music of Star Wars into a pseudo-heavy metal travesty. Aside from the music though the gameplay is flawed and the multiplayer unbalanced. Hopefully Lucas Arts can redeem themselves with Escape from Monkey Island and Obi Wan.
RTS: The Facts
Last Christmas was dominated by the new sub-genre of multiplayer focused deathmatch titles. Six months after it was released, Unreal Tournament is still a great game with over 50 maps for a variety of gameplay modes such as Assault, Capture the Flag and Deathmatch. Unreal Tournament was also our Game of the Year for 1999 - what more convincing do you need? Of course, if you're after nothing but hardcore deathmatching then Quake 3 Arena also comes highly recommended. It takes all the classic weapons from past id games such as the Rocket Launcher, Shotgun, Plasma Gun and BFG and puts them all together in a fast paced deathmatch experience with gorgeous levels packed with curved surfaces and funky shader effects. If you've only got one of these games, stop being a pretentious snob and buy the other one. Both take pride of place on our hard drives to this day.
If story-led single player is more your thing then John Mullins is your man. Mullins is of course the main character from Soldier of Fortune, Raven's latest spit shined shooter that we can't recommend enough. While it isn't the most original first person shooter almost every aspect is very well done, from the level design to the weapons. Raven also devised a few new multiplayer game types so you should still be playing it once you've finished the tough single player.
