Picture a giant chunk of planet flying through space, a floating island with colourful landscapes covered with water and a number of strange creatures. Nice place for a holiday? Far from it. The giant Kabuto reigns over the island, attacking anyone who might damage his island. He was created by the Sea Reapers to protect them, but he turned on them and became their worst enemy, forcing them to retreat to the sea where they are safe from his wrath. And the Meccaryns? Well, they're Cockney space pirates who crash landed on the island and need to fix their space ship, although it looks like they decided to shoot at some of the local wildlife in the meantime.

Even though we've been hearing about it for a while now, Giants is still looking pretty impressive. The Amityville engine is capable of drawing gorgeous landscapes comprised of huge numbers of polygons without putting too heavy a load on your machine. It's also fully deformable so you can blow chunks out of it and one particularly huge creature can also stomp hard on the ground, causing ripples to undulate outwards in the earth. The engine also employs a Level of Detail system on the character models so they'll look gorgeous close up while not putting too heavy a strain on your hardware when they're a mere spec on the horizon.

Reports on the recent press beta have tended to stress one thing – Giants is fun, hilarious, and still quite something to look at even though graphics technology has progressed since it was first shown. It's yet to go gold but it's looking close so it should be popping onto store shelves in time for Christmas.
