Yes indeed instead of the original solitary craft, this time around you get to choose from three different ships being the Dagger, Rapier, and Longsword. Each one of course has its own agenda in terms of velocity, power, maneuverability, shields and firepower. Interestingly enough if you want to manually tweak a particular ship to your liking, then you can. The control method is much the same as with the original, except that most people will find the Keyboard option a lot easier. It's much more precise than a joystick and makes thrusting, rotating and firing a tad easier. You can also 'flip' your ship as in the original but the addition of secondary (wildcard weapon) and Hyperspace options are useful and can get you out of tight spots.
Keeping your shields up is still the name of the game and Syrox has almost gotten the categorization of asteroids to a fine art, making the line-up of Asteroids read like a wine list. Everything from the 'Classic Asteroid' right up to the 'Ancient Energy Asteroid' (there are a total of nine different types) have been implemented. The nastiest of the bunch being the 'Alien Egg Asteroid', which projects a baby space worm at the hull of your ship. Unless you manage to avoid other obstacles, whilst blowing the worm away, it'll have your guts for garters. Nasty piece of work.
As if blowing apart and dodging asteroids wasn't hard enough, the level of difficulty rises with the addition of some 14 different alien craft. Blasting apart the Standard Saucer might be as easy as taking candy from a baby but try taking on the Kamikaze's later on in the game. Just like their WWII namesakes, the Kamikaze crafts come at you at great speed in an all out suicide attempt at killing you, which is often the case. Other than that picking up power ups and various Wildcard Weapons is one way to help you progress. Making sure you use what you find sparingly is of course the key. Their inclusion though certainly adds a few more dimensions to the gameplay itself. Mines, Trigger Bombs, Homing Missiles, just think of the possibilities! In total there are 13 Wildcard Weapons and three power ups, the most useful being the 'extra life'.
