Games too long nowadays?
By Acceptable_Risk November 27, 2000, 01:39 AM

I know it seems backwards but it seems that games, RPG's in particular, are taking too long to play. I knda miss the games I could bet in a weekend but would go back to every week because it was so fun or to find something new. Baldur's Gate II, for example (BTW, great game. Get it now.), They claim it takes 200 hours to finish and can be played hundreds of different ways. At my rate it'll me take months to beat and when I'm finished, Lord knows when I'm gonna want to play it again to see what I missed.

I must've beaten Fallout a dozen times. I can finish it in a week if I don't have a whole lot of pressing stuff to do. So I go back and beat it in about every possible way. I love it. As for BGII I don't know if I'll even be interested in it anymore when I finish (knowing me, I probably will though).

What do you guys think?

I think it's a good think they are so huge and complex. After all, they cost a good bit of money and you will enjoy endless hours of gaming fun. As long as there is always something to make you want to come back and play more, I don't see why they shouldn't be so long.

If long != boredom, then there's no reason to dislike games... as long as you enjoy them

well take deus ex for example, that game was pretty long and i never got bored of it. It was a nice suprise to actually take a couple of weeks to beat it. (It took me a little over 2 weeks i think and i played quite a bit each day)

i think ill go back and play it again since i didnt know doing certain things would effect the story.

He's right. Plot, depth, character development, and all-round enjoyment shouldn't take a backseat to length.

This is what I mean. It seems like alot of games nowadays are unjustifiably long. Okay, so BGII was a bad example but the point remains.

Personally I like long games. I don't replay games to much for the PC on RPG. The ones I play the most are FPS and sports games.
I wish Diablo II would have been longer. I beat it after a couple weeks on normal, but didn't go on after that since hell & nightmare were just harder, but you went through the same levels again. I wish it would have took me over a month to play that game because it was so fun.

Yeah I can really enjoy a good long in-depth game...
But as a college student with little free-time, it basically means I can never really play these games, I simply can't make the time commitment. This is why I'm stuck with Quake style games because there's no time commitment, you hop on some server and play for a few, and leave when you need to, and when you leave, you feel complete

I dunno...I guess I just wish I was a little kid again that had all day after school everyday to devote to playing video games with my buddies.

I know what you mean. I would like to try one of those online RPG games that everyone is talking about but I too am in college and don't have the time. Can't wait till these damn finals are over.

Yeah I played UO this summer pretty hardcore. It was alooooot of fun I must say. But now that I'm back in the college there's no way I can make that kind of time commitment.

I personally can't wait until I'm retired someday. By then video games will be sooooo good, and I'll have all the free time in the world

But will you still be interested??

I would certainly hope so. If I were to ever "grow out" of video games, I would imagine I would've done so already.
