UT Disk 2: a newbie question

Hey all, I just bought UT (I know--what the hell took me so long?) Anyhow--I have the rig to use the compressed textures on disk 2. (PIII OC'd to 975, Radeon 64DDR, 128 Mb PC133SDRAM) So all I have to do is install the 'extras' off disk two, and UT automatically uses them? I have all the settings set to 'high' but nowhere in the game have i found a "use compressed textures" option. The textures look awesome-so I ASSUME they're being used... is that right? thanks! Zyme

i think i figured out the answer to my own question: each of the files in the 'textures' folder on disk one are smaller than the ones that were installed onto the hard drive from disk two. I guess thats good...

I'm afraid you are wrong if you think you can use DXTC. It's a shame, but compressed textutes are NOT supported for D3D or OpenGl in UT. You can only use them if you run MeTal (on Savage 3/4/4 extreme/2000). You can get a custom made dll for OpenGl S3tc, which is supported by your card. Search at planetunreal.com (maybe your favorite site in the future, if you like UT) for that dll. I don't know if it works.Question from me: How does UT perform on the Radeon? Do you have any problems with speed or quality?

Thanks for the help--I'll check out those links, and will have to figure out how to switch from D3D to OpenGl. (I assume I go through the 'select video card' options...) As far as the performance goes, I think it's very good. I still need to download a demo file to measure the framerates, but it looks very smooth at 1024, all 'high' settings. Occasionally, there will be some chop-especially in the CityIntro sequence, which I think is D3D related. Even when things get 'hot and heavy' with multiple characters, gibs, etc, there is little apparent slow down. One thing that I'm really impressed with is the picture quality. The look of the graphics is outstanding. I get seamless rendering, great color depth, and the lighting effects, IMHO, are better than Q3A. Now the qualifier: I haven't looked at the game on an alternate video card. Am I correct in thinking that performance of UT will be more CPU dependent than 3D accelerator depdt?

Ok-now some specific info: Koos Galleon @1024, all settings/textures 'high' and 32 bit color. 62.5 FPS Also-when I allow CityIntro to loop through a second time, it goes VERY smoothly--only the first time through does it chop. (Must be a memory thing, then?) hope that helps.

I had that choppy behaviour too, but after installing 432 the texture precaching seems to work properly. Also, switching to AGP4x does help a bit. According to the CPU dependency you're absolutely right. UT needs CPU horsepower. I ran it on a P2 350 +V3, which was qiute O.K. After upgrading to K7 700 I got framerates that were outstanding ( even better than those i get with the GTS now ) So with your freakin' fast CPU the game must run like hell. One thing about compressed textures: If you get these enabled ( I had them enabled with an old S3savage4 )this will blow your mind. The resolution of them is up to 4x higher than what you see now in UT. The hit to performance was not that noticable. So I want to see this in future games, it's absolutely awesome.

Loki has an OpenGL Crack that enables the S3TC textures to run with TnT/GeForce cards. I've heard it is pretty sweet You can read about it here: http://www.gamebasement.com

The new textures are absolutely increadable.. only thing negative Ive seen is I now have a bit of studdering.. not much but just enough to make you blink.. need to change around my setting a bit more I think.

hehe..LordVampyre I've seen UT on the ViperII running the S3TC textures and it is absolutely, positively without a doubt, the best looking game I have ever seen, including QuakeIII. The texture detail is incredible!! The ViperII with the latest Metal drivers run UT as fast or faster than a Voodoo card.I bought a Voodoo4 4500 to run UT, but the ViperII blows it away, hands down.

I own a V3 a GTS and a S3Savage4. The slowes in UT is as anyboby knows the S3 due to it's crappy memory interface resulting in low filrate.

Hi UT fans! I just wanted to say that Unreal Tournament is the best game ever made, it's even better than Half Life. Quake 3 can't even be compared to UT! -Blizzard

Do you have any problems with speed or quality? Are you sure?? Cause, on my sys. 600PIII w/ GeForce 64MB DDR, I NEED d. two to use the textures at a res. of 1280x1024. But your right, for all those UT owners, specifically GeForce owners (the drivers were designed for it), you can use OpenGL with S3TC (which makes the scenes look gorgeous) with an updated OGL .dll from lokigames (last time i checked). It doesn't run to quickly, and there are problems with brightness and contrast, but it's worth a try! [!DOG]UGLYman
