Indreama?!?!
By Malone March 23, 2001, 09:51 AM

I noticed in another thread, someone mentioned an upcoming console called Indreama. What is this? Who makes it? When's it coming out?

There is no www.indreama.com website and I searched for it on all the search engines and came up with zero results. Does anyone have any info on it?

It's an "X-Box competator" that uses an x86 proc(AMD??) and embeded linux to run its games. Havent heard much more than that. I think the next issue of maximum linux is doing a story on it(since it is embeded linux).

Anything you want to know about Indrema I will be happy to tell you!

Oh it is www.indrema.com or http://idn.indrema.com NOT INDREAMA!

It will be $300, available in the spring to summer. The hardware is comparable or better than the xbox, and it can play virtually any game ever made, thanks to emulators.

Anybody that knows how to code an make a game for the Indrema on there computer with Linux for free.

The Indrema is a next generation game console, mp3 jutbox, DVD player(out of the box), and a TV recorder(like TiVO)!

It is designed for extreme gamers in mind, that is why almost nobody has heard of it! And I am bout their only supporter in this forum!

Any other questions I would be glad to answer!

By Maximus March 23, 2001, 02:27 PM

First of all, thank you 'Klashe' for the nomination!

The Indrema will support regular TV out and HDTV Output via 480p, 720p, and 1080i.

That is one of the biggest fears for people when they consider buying a new console. What kind of games will it support, how will it compete with the competition or will it just be a flop like 3DO.

Games:

See my article and updates at the end of the post @ http://www.sharkyforums.com/ubb/Forum23/HTML/000957.html

Competition:

I can tell you right now that MS and the 'Big N initially sell more consoles. They are spending way more money on advertising and marketing. MS alone is spending 500 million. Indrema's whole persona is that they intend to stick around for a long time. They will not be put out of business in the first week just because MS has atracted for initial costomers. Indrema will slowly build on their foundation, just like the way I am you guys are slowly beginning to here more about it from me.

You will here me use this analagy alot, but this situation is much like anouther one we are currently involved in. The whole fight between open-source/Linux and MS/windows/closed source is raging on. Just like in the foorporate world where Linux is being supported more and more by businesses, like IBM(who now offers Linux in ever computer and server they make and more), Intel, AMD, Nvidia, ect... Linux is finding a niche that MS could never cover, it has evolved into a masterpiece, with the help of millions of people. Now Linux is a threat to MS, and is suppose to have grown into a larger mrket share than Apple.

So what is the point of this long analegy? Indrema will open up doors for the average developer to create games that were previously only available to the big developers. So we will see revolutionary games, and we will see many new developers that have been working in there garages to come out of the dark and produce true masterpieces. Remember UT was developed by a few people as a mod originally.

Plus with hardware that is comporable to the xbox, if not better, you will have nothing to worry about in terms of graphics.

Multiplayer:

The indrema was designed for multiplayer, with built in 100 Mbps Ethernet Port and Integrated Gecko Browser and E-mail, the Indrema was designed for the Internet.

Most Importantly:

The main reason I am not worried that the Indrema will go in the closet with my 3DO(if I had one), is that even if it completely flops as a game console(which I truely believe it will not) then you still get a perfectly good DVD player(out of the box MS), MP3 Storage and Playback System, and an Enhanced Personal TV System(or TiVO). All of those features are worth thousands of dollars. So all in all we get an ultimate entertainment set top box. Don't forget the Indrema is designed Primarely as a game consoel, so the majority of their resources will go into that.

Got to go, the bell rang @school!

Hope this helps, I will do my best to answer any more questions you guys have.

It's nice to see someone that supports a console so religiously!
Just make sure that it doesn't turn into psycho fanatisism (i.e. start sniping ppl in line for an x-box).

I just found out about this myself. And it sounds like a good idea (the more competition the better) And the idea of combining a Replay TV, DVD player, MP3 player and game system all into one is Brilliant. Plus, come on... it looks damn cool!!!

Now after having said all that... I think it will fail. I don't see that they have the money to bring in any high end game developers that maintain a steady stream of games, and any "independent" games that come out will probably be like "Dope Wars", entertaining... but still. On the other hand, good possibility of some pron games. eh? eh?

By Maximus March 25, 2001, 12:44 AM

You may be right, and that is your opinion.

Just wondering if you consider Epic, EA, Activision, or Id 'big' developers.

You are right they do not have a bunch of big developers right now, but remember, they have only told us 4 so far. I think it will take a little while before big developers work with Indrema, but I also believe that the achievements of individual titles, may spur other companies to follow suit. I think that the big developers are waiting to see how the Indrema deals with all of the competition, if it flops then they will not have to worry about investing money, but if it succeeds then they can easily jump on the bangwagon, and I think they will like what they find.

It is my advise, if you are doubting the Indrema, to wait! Get an xbox or GC, and see what the response is! Right now anything can happen in the console world. Who knows, maybe both MS and Nintendo will miss there deadlines, and Indrema and Sony will have anouther year to develop games and gain developer support.

As far as the Xbox goes, the question boils down to whether notoriously deadline-dysfunctional Microsoft can deliver the goods on time. At least 75 percent of game console sales occur around the holidays, and a newcomer to the market can't take the risks that Sony has with its PS2 supply problems.

So good luck in your decision, and I hope that you choose the console that is right for you!

I'll see you guys in a week or so!

In the dev chat last night John Gildred stated that they are having funding problems, and he was not sure if the project would be able to continue. But... They also announced that the processor was bumped up to 750mhz and the final spec prototype is nearly done. Lets just hope that they can grab some investors so Indrema doesn't die off.

sounds interesting, i heard of it, but thought it was gonna fail. This thread has made me think otherwise. While i dont think it will be bigger than xbox or gc, i think it will do ok.

Hmmmmm...if they are having funding issues....why bump up the processor?

By BuggyLoop April 03, 2001, 05:28 PM

"Hmmmmm...if they are having funding issues....why bump up the processor?"

i was wondering that also

indreama should stick with their 600mhz and see if it take off first, users can upgrade later anyway right? (i hate that idea but oh well, linux freaks seems to dig it)

They should stick with the cheap DVD player that can play mp3, go on internet, and play games, NOT TRY to compete againsts sony/nintendo/microsoft, thats just suicide. indreama should stick to their multi-purpose system and pray for god that its gaming area take off after peoples bought it as a DVD player or to go on internet.

By BuggyLoop April 07, 2001, 01:03 AM

well it looks like indreama is going down
http://www.planetgamecube.com/news.cfm?action=item&id=1275

unless they get funding, but 30 days is very short if they want the money, especially if they plan to go at E3 which cost near millions.

By Maximus April 09, 2001, 04:00 PM

I agree Indrema is between a rock and a hard place, but I am not giving up until I here John Gildred say that the company has folded.

If the Indrema does fold, I think that the best thing they could do is to wait and judge the response to the xbox, then use M$'s own skeeming tacktics to exploit every problem in the xbox, then get a working prototype, before you go to the investors,a nd present the whole idea as an xbox crusher. That should please some of the many people that are fed up with MS and allow a larger window for success.

Plus hopefully the market will rebound and bring with it more willing investors.

All in all I still think they have a chance and I am crossing my fingers hoping they find those much needed investors in time.

Just my two cents

-Max
