Ok, I have a laptop and a desktop hooked together via a 10/100 ethernet lan, and I am having a problem while playing half-life and tribes, the laptop keeps freazing for a few seconds to couple of minutes! It doesn't do this at the lan at my school (the network settings are the same either place), my desktop is fine, unless the laptop is hosting, then the desktop will just make me freeze in place! Anybody have any ideas, anybody else this happen to?

It's doesn't freeze when you hook your laptop to the School's LAN? Is that what your saying? How much RAM in that laptop?

Are you using a hub or a crossover cable? Are you using the same cable in both instances? Do you have problems with other programs or just Halflife and Tribes?

I am using a crossover cable, and I probably would, but those are the only 3D games I play over my lan, and I don't really play 2D games via my lan that much either, infact never!

You might want to check out if your cable is anygood. It is much more effective to use a hub or a switch for data transfers, because they control the information being swapped back and forth and tend to limit collisions. Basically an information buffer. Verify your IP and Subnet Mask to see if you are not using the same IP (ie 192.168.0.2) and also that the Subnet Mask is the same (ie 255.255.255.0). Your IP's should be the same except for the last number. For the high transfer rates needed to run Half-life and tribes, I definately recommend a hub or switch. It pretty much sounds like connection problem/protocal problem. Do file transfers work out fine?

And here's proof! When I hook up my dad's laptop it works fine, and neither of them (laptop or desktop) freeze! Sometimes file transfers go really slow for a while but then they seem to get back up to speed, I really think it's my laptop that has the problem.
