I read a thread a few weeks back (sorry cant remember your name)that mentioned Bard's Tale and that got me thinking about how intense the atmosphere of that game was. How about the laughs of the Spy Vs Spy series on the Commodore64, Monkey Island's originality, the greatness of Shadowrun(one of the few games that I was desperate to finish for shear satisfaction)and a game called Operation Stealth(anyone know?). Of recent years I can only think of Final Fantasy 7 & 9 (gave up on 8, either the game designers lost the plot or I did) that has given me something like that feeling of fun and originality where I could lose myself in. Does anyone have this symptom and any recommendations of current games that exhibit these things?

Play Deus Ex. It will suck you in and won't let go til you have finished all three endings and tried to play through all the levels using the different methods available to you.

yeah i think that was me that mentioned bardstale, man back in the day there was some great RPG's but as time goes on you just seem to expect more. I havn't found to many RPG's lately that really catch me but there has been a few. The old ones that i used to play that just sucked me in were all 3 bardstales, the might and magic series up until 5 then it got kinda weird and monotonous, All the SST gold box games Like pool of radiance and curse of the azure bonds. accually even the wizardry series.A few that are newer that i still play and can be picked up cheap now i would think are Fallout and fallout2 (great games) Might and magic6 isnt tooo bad, Baldurs gate is great at first but then it gets a little boring. Planescape Torment if you like the baldurs gate engine is a fantastic game, great story line. some of the current ones arnt to bad but not great by my standards Icewind dale, Wizzards and warriors, baldurs gate2. But i think the game to buy is gonna be pool of radiance2 , if i know SST that is gonna be one good game.

yep yep yep.. StarCraft is a crack. I remeber Bard's Tale, Ultima series, Wizardry on Apple 2e that I still own. Has anyone remember 'Rescue Raiders'? The RPG game I really impressed was 'Sun Dog'(Space Pirate game, coded with Pascal language) and 'Auto Duel'. They are legendry games of that time. I still play StarCraft(broodwar) over internet. I buy new games(Red Alert2, Diablo1&2, etc) and I play for a while then.. after couple of days I found myself play starcraft again! damn you blizzard

Probably out of those older games you mentioned, the original Monkey islands really was a hit with me. I loved that game, it brought that desire to stay up late and do "just a bit more", and I played it from start to end a couple times. Some other games you folks mentioned, I agree are great too."Originally posted by Mandorallen of Molynnr: I think I was the only one that found Deus Ex boring" hehe, you just might be indeed.... I loved that game also. And Age of Empires II will be my favorite game for quite some time as well.

OMG! What does everyone see in Starcraft. I tried to like it. I really, really did, but I just couldn't. I'm not a huge RTS fan, and it was bad even for an RTS. I like the occasional game of Age 2 and such, but I just can't stand Starcraft.

I believe that there is no comparison with old games. I love the fact that they can fit on a couple of floppies, rather than a few CDs... and you can run them off just about any system Go to an abandonware site and get the games you love. You won't notice the space they take up on your hard drive. Or you can get a new game too. hehe. My way is cheaper.

Oh my god I can't believe I'm not the only one who played spy vs. spy on the commodore 64! and AUTODUEL! I think I was like 6 years old when I first played those. That was when Pool of Radiance on the commodore took up 8 5inch disks! and took a good 20 seconds to load the next screen. Man those were the days. Thats when I used to fake sick just so I could stay home and play Pool of Radiance..... actually I still do that.My all time fav's: Shadowrun, Star Control 2, Civilization, AutoDuel, Final Fantasy 3(6)

What, you had disks in those days, Insylum? I had to suffer the tape cassette, took anything from 10 minutes to half an hour, but the games were worth it. Made the screeching noise too, hehe. I've played Starcraft but can't get into the game. Sorry guys, uh, I DON'T KNOW WHAT DEUS EX IS!!??
