Hmm ONI....is crap
By rial9 February 02, 2001, 02:10 AM

Picked up ONI yesterday and thought it would be an awesome game since Gamespot.co.uk gave it a 9/10 (I can trust them usually). Started playing the game and 10 mins later I deleted it. This game suuuckkksss. Looks and feels like a "Daikatana 2" to me. Any one else played it?

By BuggyLoop February 02, 2001, 02:15 AM

didnt play it yet cause many peoples i know said it sux.Demo sucked also.

it makes you wonder if halo will live to its hype after we saw oni with all its reviews as the new genre of gaming blah blah media crap

By Scuttle February 02, 2001, 10:31 AM

Each to their own. I personally like the demo, it could do if there were more people's necks to break, but, its only a demo.

By BoogyMan February 02, 2001, 07:44 PM

I actually like the demo.

Nothing terribly new or exciting, but it had a good feel.

Why was the actual game so bad?

Well I like the new concept but the game is really boring. 90% of the the things you're suppose to do are finding switches. I thought we got rid of that back in the doom days. Also the fact that you can't seem to configure the keys really pisses me off.

I'm really beginning to think game developers are never going to get a clue and realize unfulfilling switch/key/door bullshit games are never going to be cool, and that they havent been fun since like 1982.

i like finding keys and stuff.....but only in doom..lol..also from all the games i've played(this is just how i feel)third person games in a 3d world most of the time suck......i don't know what first person adds to the game...hahaha..but for some reason i like it,man i really wanted the game to be nice something about girls in tight outfits with big guns and cute smiles as they snap someones neck just does something for me....

By Scuttle February 03, 2001, 01:25 PM

I still have Doom on my HD because of ZDoom.

Also i'm now on the second demo mission, the one at the airport. A quick punch in the face can be reversed to an elbow in the stomach for the guard behind, if you stick with the game then it really is an awesome game! The game does get slightly boring with just switches or consoles to hit, but the fighting technique is just amazing.

*Sighs* My sister works for Gathering of Developers who released ONI. Originally it was going to be a sweet game (might still be, she just sent me my copy in the mail... haven't tried it yet.) However once Microsoft bought Bungie they didn't give a crap about Oni anymore since they weren't releasing it (G.O.D. had made the deal before Microsoft made the purchase). So they just kinda flushed it out without refining it. Why spend time on something another company will be making money for? Anyway... just thought I'd share.

I disagree about 3rd person games sucking. I've just finished Rune, Heavy Metal FAKK, and am currently playing Hitman. All these games are really cool. Giants is also 3rd person, and if it ran at a decent speed on my computer, I'm sure I'd like it

Just read the review on Gamesot and they gave it a 6.9. I don't know what those Brits are up to. I don't think its a good game. I normaly follow Gamespot but I will d/l anyway.

Hey I have been playing Oni, and I think its ok. Only on thing whats the deal with the controls. W,A,S,D, come on who uses them and why didn't they let us pick are own key-setup. I hope the full version has the ablity to change the controls. If not I would never buy it.

The full version doesn't let you select your own keys

I played Oni for awhile and I quit. Sure the ability to use martial arts is innovative but the concept of finding keys and stuff got old really quick.

On the control issue.

I use W,A,S,D to move in my games as well but what if I'm left handed?

I can't image the difficulty of using my mouse with my left hand and use my right hand to press the W,A,S,D keys. Do you know how awkward that could be?

My verdict? Oni sucks.

I'll tell you. Coz I am left handed. I can't really play the game. It sucks.

Well you guys should do a little research before you get down on the game. I, personally really like the game, and if this is any indication of how halo will play, i'm all for it. I had reservations about 3rd person shooters, but with the way oni plays, i don't have a problem with it. Anyway, yes you can redo what keys do what. there is a file that you can edit and change it all, and it is aptly called, key_config. that and there is a left handed keyset built into the game, play the training mission and it tells you what they are.
and in case the demo does not have the training mission here is the left handed keyset
p is forward
l is strafe left
; is back
' is strafe right
o is swap/pickup
[ is drop
k is punch
, is kick
enter is walk/crouch

heh, so much for not accomidating left handed players and not being able to config the keys. any other gripes? and who uses asdw for movement? just about everyone i know of that plays quake 3 uses those keys for movement.

By The Evil Dust Bunny February 11, 2001, 12:37 PM

I got the demo of Oni, it wasn't bad and it has a lot of potential, but, there is one small problem, what the heck is with all the switches, that was on pretty stupid idea, oh well, maybe they'll make a switchless-sequal!

By Duo February 11, 2001, 01:45 PM

Why can't I use the arrow keys. Do you know how much better the game would be, how dumb are the prgramers not to allow us to use the arrow keys or at least let us pick our own

Duo

By KORDOBA February 11, 2001, 02:47 PM

Yeah firt thing i do when i get any kind of shooter is set it to my default keys.
arrows for movment (left right arrow strafes)
ctrl = duck
Keypad 0 = jump
space = use
pagedown = reload
keypad 1 = greandes/throw
you get the picture, i played the Oni demo and i felt like a retired circus chimp on the keyboard.

As for the find the switch thing, they did the old skool search and push door opens. . .Gay! Now Dues Ex they brought class and Intelligence to find the switch, 2 thumbs up on that!

By SYST3M February 11, 2001, 03:51 PM

duo, edit key_config to whatever you want you config to be, it is that easy.

Well heres the other problem, it doesn't install the game, it just unzips and plays. Doesn't install it on my HD, or it hides it so I can never find it. I have searced for iy and it has come up with nothing.

Also even if I were to edit the keys how would I use the arrow keys. Would I just type up arrow and so on?

By dighn February 11, 2001, 05:12 PM

hmm it seems the game isn't really finished!! or at least not properly polished... was it rushed??

By SYST3M February 11, 2001, 08:53 PM

didn't know how the demo worked. i have the retail version. Dunno what you have to do for the demo, but it can be done in the retail version. I still think the game is awesom, Some of the guns you get later on are just fantastic. The mercury bow is awesome. i'd love to see a similar gun in halo.

By Duo February 11, 2001, 11:07 PM

I have been playing with the left handed keys and its much easiser then with the right hand keys. But its hard, I still don't why they didn't have the arrow keys used. Still baffles the mind. I kinda like the game.

By SYST3M February 12, 2001, 12:11 PM

Well, like i said, if you like the game and purchase the retail version, the keys are fully customizable. personally i like they way they have it set up. I used to use the arrow keys for movement in games and whatever, but when i migrated to using the mose, using w,a,s,d for movement was a lot more comfertable, as well as the fact that your fingers are nearer to *a lot* more keys so you can bind more things and not have to move your fingers very far, which is a good thing for fast paced games like q3.

By Duo February 12, 2001, 07:54 PM

It worked I can use the arrow keys. YEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. The game is now cool.

Duo

By Kringe February 12, 2001, 07:56 PM

Its to much the same through out, great idea... more suited to the console market me thinks.
