Giants picture quality?
By Vindir February 06, 2001, 09:56 PM

I've been wanting to buy this game since a friend first showed me the site a couple of months ago. From you guys who have the game, I'd like to ask how did it turn out? Is it as graphicly amazing as the screenshots lead me to believe it to be? As well from a gamers viewpoint, is it really interesting enough to keep you interested and having fun all the way through?

By tsengan February 07, 2001, 12:13 AM

ohhhhhh yeah.

If you have the system to turn on everything. WOW!

You climb to the top of a mountain, see trees swying in the breeze, you practically feel the sunlight on you. It's complete T&L and bump mapping glory.

the gameplay is also truly worth it. Quite open, tactically, it is fun, fast and intelligent. It is one of my favourite games of all time.

Only problem is the damned save-game issue. No in mission saving, which can cause problems as some missions are quite hard and quite long. A real bugger really, and it has hurt the sales quite significantly.

Otherwise I truly recommend the game.

Wow no in-game saves. That's a real killer. From your description though it really sounds like I might end up spending the cash and picking a copy up.

By Mr_Q February 07, 2001, 05:02 AM

I liked the game also, altough not having a save feature in mission is quite irritating.
But the graphics are indeed nice,if u have a gef or gef2.
Altough i kinda liked more Sacrifice graphics.

Stupid Question: What type of game is Giants? I have heard about it but I have been lazy and not really looked into it. I agree, Sacrifice is a good game to show off the WOW factor.

For you people having the game: What do you think it takes to be able to turn everything on and to max?

I 've got: Celeron 466, 128mb and a Geforce 2 Ultra.

Interested in buying the game, even if the missing save feature really concerns me.

By tsengan February 07, 2001, 06:02 PM

Triton: your system SHOULD be able to handle it. Keep your fingers crossed. giants is optimised for nvidia cards, so that should be fine. Might not be able to max it though.

Sol: Giants is mainly an action game. It can be played like an FPS or in 3rd person, the interface is very simple and very easy. And there's elements of RTS in there with base building.

It's very easy to learn as a game. The graphics in Sacrifice are a bit better overall - but the giants graphics are simpler, and easily as good as the screenshots when the options are turned up a bit.

Yeah with geforce your system should do well the game was built around the geforce card.
I have a voodoo 5500 and everything goes pretty well until the base building levels, then its pretty taxing with everything cranked up.
As for the game itself It has to be my 2nd favorite game ever, starcraft being first.
It is truly a beautiful game, with fantastic humor, damn I laughed a lot (Grandpa Borjoyzee)

your system is a oxymoron. a c466 and a GF2 ultra. Anyway you should be able to play it.

My biggest problem with the game is, it runs horrible on "most" machines I tried it on a 1ghz and a 64meg geforce ddr 256megs pc133 the thing went down to 2fps on some levels and then would jump up to 50 fps and balance out at around 30fps, which is completely playable. currently i run it on my 550 p3 and it runs fine. hopefully in future game patches the performance will go up. the lack of an in gmae save feature didnt bother me too much because most of the levels are short. You will get pissed off on some of the base building levels though. all in all, the game is easily one of the best games i have ever played. The popup bomb is one coolest weapons i have seen in any game.

Heh, I don't know what the word "oxymoron" means, but I think you mean that my system is a little bit unbalanced. Yes, it might be but for the time being, it runs every game with full graphic quality just fine. And as long it's that way, I'm not going to upgrade.

By alienrash February 08, 2001, 03:50 PM

I had it running on a C400@450 w voodoo4. Base building ate a lot of resources.

There was a major difference in performance when I went to PIII600 (base building). Yes I know, crappy video card. (Everything was turned on)

Hey, can someone explain the word oxymoron for me in other words? I'm really curious what this word means. It's spelled exactly the same in my language, but I don't have a clue what it means.

I heard it was a combination of many game types.

An oxymoron is a combination of words that don't seem to go together very well. Examples:
Jumbo Shrimp
Congressional Morality (hehe)
Deluxe Standard (actually a Parker Fly guitar model)

and so on. You get the idea.

Your post last night got me interested in this game again, Vindir. I checked it out some more: Then I made a choice between Giants and Sacrifice. I chose giants (Sacrifice i will get next) I had a Best Buy Gift Certificate and so I got the game. Wow is it awesome. One thing, though. If you buy the game and try to play it without the patch, you will be stuck playing Level 1, part 2 for infinity. The patch fixes that. Games Bad A$s!

Thanks, I get the idea now. This word might come in handy sometime.

That's great to hear Dude Downloading the demo right now to give it a try. Didn't even give it a thought before firing off the post, thanks bunches for your replies guys And again, glad you like the game Dude

Really odd, noticed something looking at this thread. I don't start many topics, I'm more of a response type guy. I've noticed, the topics I start hoping for them to blow up and get a ton of responses usually die a painful death. Ones I post figuring I'll get a quick easy response turn out with 15+ posts Pfhht
