SharkyForums.Com - Print: computers will not "see" each other on home network

computers will not "see" each other on home network
By da_finster January 04, 2001, 08:37 PM

I have three computers on my home network and none of them will see each other. I have a 10Mbs hub a motherboard with 10/100 built on a 10/100 card and a 10Mbs card. I used to have the integrated one and the 10Mbs one together great. But I went to school and when I came back I had bought another NIC for the computer I had sitting around. Even before I tried adding the new computer to the network, the original two refused to recognize one another. Now all i get when I try to double click on "Entire Network" in "Network Neighborhood" all I get is a message along the lines of: "Unable to reach network" or something like that.
Can someone please help me out. Point to a good site or offer me some expert advice. I am in dire need of a good UT game!

Try setting each computer to an individual IP address, and make sure all their subnet masks are teh smae.

I use:

10.0.1.3
10.0.1.4
10.0.1.5 for IP addresss

all with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Here's a couple links sice I don't feel like typing much, but if u still have trouble I'll answer the question personally: http://firingsquad.gamers.com/guides/lan/default.asp http://www.tweak3d.net/articles/network/

Those should get you started

Also, in the network control panel under the identification tab, make sure you are in the same workgroup (EXACT same caps and all), and each have unique computer names....and as the last poster said, make sure they have unique ip addresses. If still no go, pop up a dos prompt , type "ping x.x.x.x" no quotes where x.x.x.x represents the ip of the other comp...if you get a response, there is a connection...

I think your computer thinks it's still at school on the gateway or subnet. You might need to go back into control/systems/modem and change the DNS settings again. You can always try adding in shared drive support options while your in that area.

go to properties under network neighborhood.

1: make sure client for microsot is installed (check box log on and restore...}
2: your network card is there.
3:tcp (set to obtain ip)
4: file and print sharing if you want.

Under Id.
I always make sure the workgrop name is the same. For all the machines.

create Shortcut to Winipcfg.exe (C:\WINDOWS\WINIPCFG.EXE}

double click on that.{Winipcfg.exe}
click on:
release all

click on:
renew all

click on more info.

should show host name the same as your computer name

under ethernet should show your card and
node type as broad cast.

The only problem is if you have cable modem.

the above will work with the cable modem off.

If you have the cable modem on it will grap network info for the cable and wil not see the other machines. You would have to find out from your provider if you can assign it a dns number.

Hope this helps you can email me or post hear and I will try to help.

The above works for 98 and 98 se.
95 ?

I have completely reformated and reinstalled Win98SE on my computer. And my IP addresses are set to:
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2
192.168.0.3

and my subnet masks are all set to:
255.255.255.0

would these IP addresses all be including in the same subnet? I took a course on all that but I can't remember half of it.
I checked out both links, and I seem to have it all set up right.

Man Windows sucks!

Also make sure you have a networking protocol, like IPX or NetBueiinstalled. TCP/IP only does Internet.

ok i to also will have 3 computers networked but 4 now i only have 2 but it looks to me like every1 has covered everything but one litle thing. I to had this problem and one point and time all I had to do is enable INTERNET CONNECTION SHAREING. This is located in the control panel then double click on add/remove programs then click on the tab at the top of the screen called windows set up form there go down to communications double click that (make sure the check mark stays checked) and once inside communications scroll down to u c internet conn sharing. it will walk you through it pretty much you will need a floppy disk handy and will have to run the floppy on the second comp

hope this works peace

What speed is your hub? If it is a 10mb hub, you can't put 100mb signals through it. Most hubs can handle just one speed - 10 or 100 - not both. Make sure your NICs are set to a common speed.
