The Debate On Software Piracy
By AMD_Forever December 24, 2000, 01:12 PM

Personally, I believe Software Piracy in any form is wrong. It hurts PC Game Creators and Makes the PC Game market less profitable for certain game companies than it already is. We PC gamers already have the likes of PS2 and XBox ready to destroy PC gaming, consoles that are that powerful add to the threat that major game companies will declare the pc game market un-profitable and leave it. Piracy only helps them come to that conclusion moreso. I would absolutely love some advocates of Piracy to post here and try in vain to defend their actions.

You can't defend those actions. It's stealing.
You can only convince some people why it is justified.

By andryuha December 25, 2000, 01:11 AM

For the price of one game $35-40, some can get 35-40 games. Sure there is lack of manuals and nice game packaging, but I think the price justifies it.

Some people can't really afford to buy new games, which I personally think are too expensive.

And with constant development of computer hardware, consoles may be ahead for a short while, but computers will always catch and beat them.

By AMD_Forever December 25, 2000, 01:34 AM

the reason the prices are high is because of dumb **** thiefs like you.

"the reason the prices are high is because of dumb **** thiefs like you."

Can you honestly say that the prices are high because of people who pirate the software?

No, you can't. Prices are high because people that can afford those prices are buying those high priced games. If there is demand, prices will stay high because of people like you that keep buying the games at those prices.

I'm not saying piracy is morally right, it's not. But not everyone has money to buy lots of games at the stores.

By Phatman December 25, 2000, 09:47 PM

I don't like pirates. They are thiefs. It's as simple as that.

Actually, I did some reading into this on the web and some companies have stated that games could be cheaper if they didn't have to deal with copy protection and pirates. On the other hand, there is no proof that the prices would be any lower though. But it is stealing and if you are a software developer, it really sucks to see your product given away for free. If you complain about 30-45 dollars for a game, why dont you just wait a few weeks and get them for like $19.00 or something like that?

Yeah, games go on sale all the time. For instance, Q3TA is on sale for 17.99 at best buy. I'm gonna go get it if the roads aren't as icy

Boy, you invite someone to have an open debate and then you blantantly insult them when they accept your challenge.

By doing that you are basically saying that "I don't have an argument, but I am going to call you 'Ugly' and that means that I win"

Not very good debating skills. It's too bad, I was hoping for a topic a little more....mature.

hehe.. Reminds me of an incident..

I bought Realmyst for my wife when it came out. I can run just about any game on the market with my PC. Can I run Realmyst? No. Crashes to desktop..

OOOOOO!! A patch! (tried three driver revisions, etc..)

I take it back to hell (Best Buy) and try to return it (just before Christmas). They won't take it back. Return moron has no idea what a driver is or anything else PC related. I proceed to make a small scene and tell everyone else in return and closest purchase line that they wouldn't take back this software that won't work.

Get this..

Two people in line actually return software they were going to buy and leave

They ask me to leave.. Boy was I pissed.

I got my revenge. Anyone interested in a used copy of RM?

P.S. I know this isn't really related but if I could have downloaded a demo (the real demo) and tested it I could have saved my $ 15.00..

Anything worth buying, I buy. Anything not.. I download from somewhere. You can't always tell the good stuff from the S***.

Best buy is bitches about returning games. They are so concerned with software piracy and stuff like that. I can't really blame them. Hell, a lot of people would go to best buy copy a game and then return it saying it didn't work on their system.

My Suggestion to you is always buy (games) from EB world or Waldensoftware. they accept games back, no quesitons asked. And they usually have prices comparable to Best Buy.

By Edgerobber December 26, 2000, 06:02 PM

Piracy is wrong, there's no doubt about it.
But so is charging large amounts of money for useless software.

By Phatman December 26, 2000, 08:38 PM

I also hate the fact that stores won't take back games due to piracy. If a game doesn't work, you shouldn't be forced to keep it! What about those games that cost like $60 and $80? If I spend $80 on a game, it better work!!!!

Good idea.. I should do that. Maybe with my Radeon I'll have to from now on..

By op4_camper December 27, 2000, 03:18 PM

Thats why I buy at EBX. There in our area (pa)dont know if there everywhere. They give you like 7 or so days to return a game for any reason.

I dont realy care what I pay for game. So long as it works and plays as advertised. I read alot, try demos, or try other peoples games first.

I'm just gonna say this... I spend thousands of dollars on my computer, I pay for a net connection, I paid for all the software when I first started out, but you know what? You gotta be crazy to think I'm gonna pay $250 for an OS, or $350 for Office 2000. I've gotten over 30 CD's of software in the past 6 months, and you know what? I just bought Giants today and its the first thing I actually dropped a dime on. $50 for a game I'll be done with in a day? with little to no replay value? yeah right, if I'm gonna use it excessivly (UT, StarCraft) I'll pay for it if its reasonable, if I just wanna check it out? Buy, Burn, Return.

That is your own fault though. You can wait a few weeks for it to be $30, or $20. The only game that I bought at full price that I don't play a lot anymore is Quake 2. I don't own a TON of games. Also, about the MS Office, I find that to be rather ridiculous to have to pay $300 for an upgrade. No matter what though, pirating software is illegal. There are ways around the high prices, its called patience.

By $HAFT December 28, 2000, 08:57 AM

Soglasen :-) Andruyxa, oni ne sekut nixera :-)
I agree with Andruyxa, if you are offered same thing for $50 and for $3 what are you gonna choose ? People are egoistic by nature. They are not striving to save the world, hey want self satisfaction. Which due to smart people stealling and cracking games (before they even appear on an open market) canmake it doable.

Actually, I havent. For one thing, Office 2000 came with my computer. Second, I buy games that I know im going to like. ala, quake 3. I knew what to expect so if you played the demo and expected something better to be in the full version, then thats your own fault. Same thing happend with Q1 test, Q2 test. I don't buy a lot of games so I am not one to sit here and rag about pirating becuase I don't do it for games. Simple as that.

By IL96 December 28, 2000, 09:14 AM

Guys, this is a pointless discussion, and like other BS should be moved to an OFF TOPIC forum. Piracy exists, and there's nothing you can do about it. Even here in the US with all this FBI warning and stuff, any person who is not lazy can get ANY PIECE OF SOFTWARE for free or for $5. Download it, buy->burn->return, goto Brooklyn NY, copy it it off some1, in the worst case get a groupe of 10 - 15 people, and BUY the soft, then make copies for every1...
In other countries there are big companies that crack and manufacture pirated CD's. and there's nothing you can do.
