The best strategy game ever

Hi. So, what do you think is the best strategy game you've ever played ? I think Starcraft should be called the best strategy game ever, I used to play it a lot, the reason I don't play it anymore is that it starts to get old, but it's still a great game. It scores high because of the 3 races you can choose between, Protoss, Zerg and Terran. My favorite was the Zerg's. They were great! Another good strategy game is Red Alert 2, although not as great as Starcraft it's still a good game. What's your favorite strategy game then ?

Personally I am not that big a fan of strategy games myself. Sure, I have enjoyed the pleasures of C&C, Startcraft and the rest, but I don't think they have the long-lasting appeal of FPS and games like Diablo II, which you can play over the net and never get bored of. I find that no matter how good you are at RTS games, there is often a simple strategy which will carry yoju a long distance (tankrush, anyone?), thus not encouraging you to discover and master new, clever tactics as much as these other genres do...Soz...

TA, AOE 1 & 2, C+C, Red Alert, and Cround Control. All great strategy games. I really don't think there is one strategy game that is the greatest.Duo

Age of Empires 2 with the expansion is the best right now. Followed closely by Red Alert 2 and Total Annihilation.

Diablo II was a cool game, but it got BORING. I mean, clicking madly at enemies only is pleasing for so long...

Indeed, that's true, but it's still a game you can return to not having plaed it for a while, which is more than I can say for most RTS games. And by adding Diablo II I do mean multiplayer D2... I have to agree though, Age of Empires 2+Expansion rocks

I didn't care for Diablo 1 or 2. I thought they both sucked. I made it to Act 2 in D2 and haven't played it since. Bought Icewind Dale and was addicted rather quickly. Currently, I'm playing Baldur's Gate 2.

Warcraft II is my all-time favorite, for the time it was good. Now I constantly play Age of Empires II (Conquerors expansion), and I've recently started playing Red Alert 2. Overall though, AOE2 would get my vote for best strategy game!

Ok I know I have said this at least a hundred times. But you are letting a great RTS slip by, and that is Ground Control. Go and check it out you will not be sorry, trust me.Duo

In Ground Control you only have units which you shall attack with. I have always liked strategy games where you actually build a base and harvest something like mineral and gas to be able to build more. Like in Starcraft, you need gas and mineral to be able to build more buildings and units, and that's great! I'm not really used to only attack the enemy with tanks and other units without having building a base and collect money (minerals, gas ). By the way, I like 2D strategy games, not really used to 3D strategy games yet Although,in Unreal Tournament which is a 3D First Person Shooter it's great with 3D. Would have been boring to play in 2D! Anyone else think 2D strategy is best for the moment, or is 3D strategy games the future ?-Blizzard

Shingen the Ruler, 8bit nintendo. Railroad Tycoon, commodore 64. Squad Leader, Avalon Hill board game. Warcraft II, PC.And I have to mention Braveheart as the worst, most disappointing, bug-ridden, abomination I've ever eagerly waited 10 months to waste good money on.

It just depends on how well the 3D feature is implemented. Look at Homeworld and Homeworld Cataclysm. They are great RTS games that are fully 3D.

I hate RTS games were you have to gather ore or any thing like that. I am no good at that. but Ground Control gives you a set number of units and you have to come up with strats. to attack your opponet.

I feel a good RTF should be like a game of Chess. I despise games that are only about the offensive rush. A good RTF should balance resource gathering, reconnaissance, technology, offense, defense, and maybe even diplomacy. My current favorites are Homeworld, and Age of Empires 1 & 2. Age of Empires and its sequel are very good RTFs. AOE provides for both passive or aggressive strategies and the ability to change your approach through the different ages. Also by using defensive elements like walls and towers you can choke the offensive rush that other games too often favor. Homeworld took RTF to a new dimension literally. Homeworld in my opinion cannot even be compared to traditional 2D birds eye RTFs. The ability to tactically control fighters and capital ships in 3D space is just a whole new experience. The result is a game that favors complex 3D tactical strategy over simple resource gathering and generation of units.

Since almost everybody is talking about RTS games I will add a few turn-based games. Civilization (I&II), Railroad Tycoon, Master of Magic (My all time favorite), Master of Orion (I&II) (Hmmm, interesting Pattern so far) Heroes of Might and Magic (II&III)(I never played I, I was to busy playing Master of Magic) Imperialism (I only, I didn't like II) Capitalism Alpha Centari

Warcraft II would be the best of all time mainly cause it was probably the first to really get recognition for great gameplay, stragety, cinematics etc. It set a standard really for the next generation of stragety games. Think about it.. if a company can make a game that sells half as good as Warcraft II has(and still is) then they've got an awesome game.

Strategy? Two players? You goota check out "Transport Tycoon". Yea, ok, its not "real" 3D. It does have multiple animated pop-up windows to watch any part of the map though! And a nice sound track. It has so much strategy that one of my 2player strategy friends REFUSED to play it on the grounds it had too much strategy - (compared to Starcraft) and looked too difficult. awe... Yea - the saying goes - once you learn to ride the bike...
