Cost: 39,800 Yen (US $371.79)

Available: March 4, 2000 in Japan, Fall 2000 Europe and North America

One million units in one weekend. Sony sold one million Japanese PlayStation2 consoles in one weekend. For comparison, it took Sega six weeks to sell one million US Dreamcasts, and Sega was breaking records at the time. Something tells us Sony has a hit on their hands.

Sharky Extreme staffers were lucky enough to spend some quality time with one of those said million PS2 units and as a result bring you an in-depth look at the technology and hands-on opinion of Sony's most wanted console. We've played through the best and worst of the launch titles and compare the state of affairs between the PS2, Dreamcast and the PC.

When we heard of the release, we couldn't just sit here, we had to check it out for ourselves. However, stories of PlayStation2 units being confiscated by special Japanese customs officers precluded us from getting one sent here. But there was nothing to prevent us from going to Tokyo for a marathon of PS2 testing. We also managed to get plenty of actual screen shots too (not just digital camera shots of a screen), so we've got eye candy galore.
