Sharky Extreme typically doesn't cover the console industry. The Sega Dreamcast, however, isn't your typical console. Powered by Hitachi's SH-4 processor, VideoLogic's PowerVR2DC graphics chipset and Windows CE, the Dreamcast is the first system to bridge the gap between the PC and console video game industry... it even has a built-in cooling fan.
The Dreamcast launched last week in Japan with an insane amount of fanfare. Buyers waited in lines for days in hopes of being the first to experience Sega's latest creation. Retail stores were only allowing one system per household, if they had any in stock. Those lucky enough to find one most likely paid more than the MSRP… sometimes up to three times more. And while the system isn't due on North American shores for another 10 months, we managed to get our hands on a few units for in-house testing and bragging rights.
This article will serve as a basic overview of the Dreamcast. It will offer a light but solid foundation to those not familiar with the system and prepare those not anticipating the Sega marketing blitz that's sure to come within the coming months. Over the course of the following weeks we'll take a closer look at the system, compare the PowerVR2DC to the PC based PowerVR 250 and maybe review a game or two. Until then, enjoy the visual tour of Sega's Dreamcast.
