The Quake III Arena Point Release Beta Patch v.1.27h can now be downloaded from FilePlanet . This server-side patch fixes a nasty muliplayer bug. A must-have file for anyone running a 1.27 server. Fixes and Additions:

  • Fixed James model bug
  • CD Key read correctly when starting from Q3A vs TA shortcuts
  • Handicap exploit fixed
  • Bot routing bug fixed
  • Potential 20 FPS increase for some clients
  • Sensitivity is back how it was

Here are a few more details on this release from id Software's Robert Duffy:

"One other quick note, this will work fine on top of Team Arena and/or 1.27g ONLY. It will not work on top of 1.17 or prior versions. Once we release a full update in a few weeks there will be a complete installer to go from any version to the latest. This update is primarily intended for server admins to address the handicap exploit and it IS a BETA.

We have just put up 1.27h as a BETA. Since there has been mass confusion in the past, I said >>>BETA<<<. This addresses the handicap/guard exploit and fixes a few other issues. It is a .exe only release primarily intended for server administrators but it should be OK for client use as well. We had not intended to release an update until later this month or early next month but the handicap issue warranted a quick update."

Few games in recent memory were the recipients of such wildly diverse critical opinion as was the original Starfleet Command. Some loved it. Some loathed it. Some found it so confusing that they were sure that the real 23rd century would be rolling around before they could master the incredibly obtuse interface. Starfleet Command II remains a deep game, just like its predecessor, but will you love it or loathe it? Find out all the details of this game in our Starfleet Command Vol II: Empires at War Review.

"Well, in some ways. Starfleet Command II remains a deep game, just like its predecessor. If you're looking for a strategic title that will absorb you for weeks while you learn its many complexities, there's no more worthwhile investment currently available at your local software store. At the same time, however, I have to doubt that even the most hardened grognard will bother with the troublesome interface long enough to discover the fulfilling gameplay. The menu system is needlessly complicated in almost every way. At the same time as the designers of other strategy series are tightening things up and streamlining control systems, the team who worked on this one at Taldren has ignored the trend and developed a scheme that's every bit as hard to figure out as the flashing lights on Spock's old science station."
