Stardock has announced Galactic Civilizations, a turn-based strategy game set in the 22nd century. The player must take command of the human civilization and guide its expansion into the galaxy. The galaxy, configurable to be tiny or gigantic, has several alien races with their own objectives in the galaxy. Through researching new technology, military expansion, diplomacy, and economic prowess, humanity will fight wars, create trade treaties, face ethnical dilemmas, and try to unite, conquer, or destroy the galaxy. What sets Galactic Civilizations apart from other games is its in-depth focus on politics, diplomacy and trade as well as its emphasis on large scale military tactics. While warfare is similar to other strategy games, the underlying economics and politics of Galactic Civilizations allows for players to win through many different paths.

Galactic Civilizations was originally created in 1994 for IBM’s OS/2. It took advantage of many cutting edge features in OS that are today available in Windows (allowing the complex economic and artificial intelligence engine to be implemented on Windows 98/ME/2000). The game attracted a large cult following due to its immense replayability. To this day it is still the most popular OS/2 game of all time. Stardock has reunited the original team that developed the OS/2 version. That team hopes to take strategy games to a new level of depth. Galactic Civilizations will debut in beta on Stardock’s new Drengin Network, an on-line gaming network currently in beta that gamers subscribe to it to receive all of Stardock’s games as they are developed. Stardock hopes to have the stand-alone retail version of Galactic Civilizations ready by Christmas but expects it may slip into 1Q2002.
